Political history of Belgium from 1830 onwards

This new political history of Belgium provides the reader with insights into the management of the economic recession of the 1980"s, the constitutional reforms of 1988 and 1992-93, into recent developments among political parties and pressure groups and the problems facing them today, and into the changing relations between parliament, the government and the titular head of state. This edition has been completely revised, involving a re-examination ofevents from 1830 to 1945 in the light ofmore recent historical work and a systematic re-working of the period after 1945. Very recent developments are treated fully, including the crisis of legitimacy of the political system in general and of the workings of the law in particular. Seldom has the Belgian politicallandscape seen as many new developments as recently: an electoral breakthrough by the extreme right, a mass demonstration of popular concern for murdered and missing children, questions about the monarchy after the death of King Baudouin and an increasing influence of the media. A new and revised edition of this standard work on Belgian political history was overdue.
