The Other Final

Bhutan is an ancient Buddhist nation. Montserrat is a largely Christian British dependency with a population consisting of ex-slaves, indigenous Carib-Indians, British colonialists and Irish. These two cultures could not seem more different. But together they undertook a football game in the summer of 2002 recorded by Dutch photographer Van der Meer (full page prints), in a spirit contrasting directly to the cynically commercial world of many sports today. This is the only published document of an event that has become etched on the lives of all those who watched, organised and participated.
