In the bleak moments after defeat in winter 1940, Winston Churchill knew that Britain had to strike back hard, no holds barred. He called for the development of a completely new form of warfare, recruiting a band of eccentric free-thinkers to become the world’s first 'deniable' secret operatives, and offering these volunteers little but a blaze of glory and all-but-certain death.
