Masterfully written novel

The autobiography of my mother is about Xuela, a girl growing up in Dominica, which is highly impacted by colonialism. Dominica is an independent nation, but it remains under British rule. Xuela’s mother died when she was born, and this has a big impact on her. As a result, she is sent from place to place and never feels like she belongs there. Her father is not able to take care of her and has his own ‘troubles’ to deal with. The book touches upon themes of racism, colonialism, sexism, desire, and parent-child relationships. It’s not an easy book to read, but I would highly recommend it.
I loved the prose of this book! Jamaica Kincaid is such a gifted writer. The plot was composed masterfully, and I will certainly read other books by her.
